Do you have a news tip?

Do you a tip for a story you want to share?

We currently offer four ways to provide material to our our journalists. They are WhatsApp, Signal, email and postal mail. Each offers encryption an security features to protect your anonymity.

What Makes Your News Tip Good?

Documentation is the key to a good news tip. Speculation is fine, but it does not warrant sending us a tip unless there is documentation or sources to back up the tip.

WhatsApp is a free messaging app owned by Facebook. It that allows end-to-end encryption. Only the sender and recipient can read messages, photos, videos, voice messages, documents and calls. Though you can limit some account information shared to Facebook, WhatsApp still keeps records of the phone numbers involved in the exchange and certain metadata, including timestamps on messages.

Signal is a free and open source messaging app developed by Open Whisper Systems, a large community of volunteers, and offers end-to-end encryption to send messages, photos, video and calls. Signal though does not support sending documents. Signal retains only your phone number, when you first registered with the service and when you were last active. No metadata surrounding communications is retained. The app also allow for message self-destruct.

You can send us encrypted or unencrypted emails. For unencrypted email we use Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) encryption software. We suggest using Mailvelope, a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox, which makes it easy to use PGP. The extension will only encrypt the contents of the email you’re sending. Mailvelope will not encrypt metadata such as sender, recipient, subject or information about when the email was sent. This metadata will be available to your email provider.
